10For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. 11Prescribe and teach these things. 1 Timothy 4:10-11
Paul has just warned Timothy of the subtle deviations introduced by apostates who work their way into the fold. He would be a “good servant” or “minister” in “pointing out” (suggesting not excoriating) the error in tacking on do’s and don’ts to the simple truth.
To spot inconsistencies and wrong thinking, whether intentional or innocent, a man of God needs to constantly study the “words of faith” and “sound doctrine.” This is not merely reading, but fully digesting and exercising out what has been written, for future strength and fortitude to stand for the truth and to withstand evil.
With the energy this nourishment (training meal) brings, you can possess the discipline to “have nothing to do” with trivia, and to remain focused, and, for lack of a more contemporary word, “pious” (or godly) in your words and deeds.
A man of God never breaks his training regimen, knowing that he will need every ounce of power it brings in “laboring and striving” for the truth.
He has his “hope fixed on the living God,” and the salvation of men.
