“For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased” and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 2 Peter 1:17-18
A witness telling the truth will say in frustration to the skeptical, “I know what I saw, I know what I heard!” There is power behind the testimony of an eye witness, and Peter saw the Lord, Moses and Elijah glorified on the Mount and heard the voice of God pronounce his pleasure with his son. He took the occasion to suggest tabernacles for each, so the remarkable event was even more memorable because of his unwitting faux pas. What probably continued to ring in his ears was the Father’s admonition to “listen to him!” That is to Jesus. In addition to all that Peter had in his mind about his time with the earth-bound Son of God, this event had to send chills down his spine and raise goose bumps at every remembrance. There was force behind Peter’s words, because he saw what he saw, and heard what he heard, and it was both glorious and terrifying. More importantly, the same should hold true for utterances of any prophet from God (in his Word), to heed what has been transmitted directly from the throne, down through time, for such will occur, as certain as the three blazing figures remained etched in Peter’s brain.
