But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. Philippians 1:23-24
We hear the saying from time to time, “he’s so heavenly minded he’s no earthly good.” I’d say a big problem we have is we’re seldom heavenly minded. That’s why spiritually-minded souls stick out like a sore thumb.
The cares of this world do choke out our longings to be with Him, even though we’ve already been transferred from this “domain of darkness” to his kingdom (Colossians 1:13), and we’re citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20)–right now!
Some how we all need to find our spiritual equilibrium, that of being “hard-pressed” to resolve the conundrum to go or stay. It’s a relief that it’s not our decision!
So we should be intensely longing for that which is “very much better,” but at the same time grappling with a strong sense of earthbound duty, knowing that there’s much work to do here.
