As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for soon it is gone and we fly away. Psalm 90:10
It is shocking and sobering to realize how quickly you arrive at the Bible’s maximum age of 70 years. You can only hope that you’ve been endowed the strength to tack on ten more. It’s very much like the stoppage time added by the referee in a soccer match, with that person being God. Life changes at this point, anxiously waiting for the three whistles to blow at any moment. It would be a shame to have squandered the preceding years and to now face what amounts to a desperate “hurry up” offense.
For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ. Colossians 2:5
There is.at least some solace in having lived your allotted years with “good discipline” and “stability.” The message here is while there’s still ample time on the clock, put your life in order in keeping with God’s priorities, and stay steadfast in your faith. Then when you arrive at the end you will have no regrets, and whatever bonus time you get will be treated as a gift rather than a death sentence.
