Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2
It’s important to keep yourself awake on long drives. One can easily become mesmerized, but more often, in my case, drousy. We can do enough to stay awake in prayer, but Paul wants us alert in it. Like standing watch with your life (or others’ lives) on the line.
It should not be lost on us that it’s a privilege to enter into the Lord’s throne room without notice. We’ll wait two months for a doctor’s appointment, yet our access to the King of kings is instantaneous. So there are no barriers, nothing stopping us from conversing with God. We’ve mentioned having a place of prayer, but the truth is, any place and every place is conducive for striking up a conversation.
What’s enviable, if the world really knew how privileged we are, is our direct, immediate, full access to Almighty God. We may become distracted or drousy, but he’s always on the alert. Keep him on the line, not on hold.
