6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6–7
Whatever the case as it relates to God, we must consciously consider and make ourselves lower. The Greek word is tapeinoo, which means to abase ourselves. I’d rather put myself in that position than to have him do it for me out of necessity!
For a time, like Jesus in his humanity in a way, we are made a little lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7) while we tread this earth, so we know for certain we can’t walk through walls.
There will be a time when the Lord needs us exalted for some work on his behalf, but I’d say these instances are few and far between, unless we’re adamant about staying put under his thumb.
In the previous verse 5, Peter recalls a passage in Proverbs (3:34) that says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
How appropriate that my Bible capitalizes this admonition to indicate the direct quote. Regarding humility, it’s appropriate punctuation.
We are also to cast all, not some or most of, our anxiety upon him. Why do we always insist on keeping a little back for ourselves?
This is a “life verse” for many because of the truth, “because he cares for you.” This is the recipe for peace of mind, but it must be followed to the letter to work.
