Self Taught

5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.  1 Corinthians 3:5–6

What saddens me from time to time is the shelving of a particular pastor or teacher because of one’s evolving understanding of theology. I avoid labels of my personally held beliefs and I hesitate to define them by a pastor, theologian, particular theology, systematic or otherwise, or denomination. Yes, there have been important men from whom I’ve been taught down through the years, but to hitch a ride to a man rather than to the illumination caused by the Word of God through the Spirit of God made possible by belief in the Son of God is dangerous.

By this time in my life I should have an established belief system engendered by daily findings in the words and works of God, in the Bible and from my own personal experience. Surely, there have been some special men who’ve planted and watered, but my allegiance is to God who caused the growth.
