We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (1 John 4:16)
There is a saying that a former pastor was fond of saying, “Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.” He meant there was nothing he had yet to experience in a particular realm. Now of God it is obvious that we will not experience Him in the fullest sense until we enter through the pearly gates, but it is possible to have experienced enough of him in this life to refuse to question his existence and his love for us. There’s a point where we’ve walked with him long enough to not abandon ship when things start to go south. But still, we may not have faced death square in the face. That will be the ultimate test.
But for now, we strive to get to where a sickness doesn’t derail us, or a bent fender is not a cause for the gnashing of teeth, or the loss of your favorite team in the “big game” is taken in stride. There’s a time when we should have settled confidence in Almighty God, and there’s no reflexive response to worry or fret, or to lose it. We immediately think God’s got this! If he wishes to heal me he will, it’s not my car anyway it’s his, or it’s just a game.
We’ve taken up permanent residence in God’s love and we’ve unloaded all the boxes. This is where we need to be, where we ought to be.
