10 The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. (1 John 5:10–12)
John has just discussed the roles of the water, the blood, and the Spirit of truth in attesting to the authenticity of Jesus Christ. To be honest, understanding these concepts is a bit daunting for us mere mortals. Thankfully, there is a star witness waiting in the wings, and he is God himself. There is no one greater.
In a sense, he calls himself to the stand to testify, and “the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” (1 John 5:11) And if he needed to add to his testimony—but he doesn’t—he’d say this, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” (Matthew 3:17), and “in Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” (John 1:4)
The thing is, those who accept this testimony as true, have the very same testimony within themselves, and with this testimony comes the added benefit of eternal life! 1 John 5:10 More importantly—if there is anything more important than eternal life!—we are likewise called to testify. It is our duty. As a father is proud of his son and his accomplishments, so should we be in our Father’s son.
He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. (1 John 5:12)
You either have the Son or you don’t.
Also, to not believe God’s testimony is to call him a liar. It’s one thing to dismiss Christianity as just another religion, quite another thing to call its Founding Father a liar. There are “grave” consequences for this when push comes to shove.
Let’s not make such a big deal out of testifying to fact that we possess eternal life through God’s Son. Why not mark our territory? Why not tell it like it is? Why not cut to the chase?
