Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, so that your joy may be made full. (2 John 12)
Always choose the direct face-to-face approach to resolve differences or to deliver important news, if possible. (See also 3 John 13-14) This generation opts out of the “hard thing” by texting (email seems passe), almost always requiring further explanation to be clear. Cryptic communication without the coloration that might be possible with more words and eye contact often sets off waves of second guessing. Even a phone call leaves you wondering if what is said is well received.
As John states, he had many things to write, but wanted to make their joy full with his presence. There is something to be said for the give and take of an “in person” conversation, and the reassurance of non-verbal cues. We need to reintroduce repartee into our relationships, with the exchange of well thought out words colored by the expressions of our face, the tone of our voice, and the soft press of a hand on a shoulder.
