There was a time when a collection of words triggered deep conviction and emotions. There was a time when the uttering of the Pledge of Allegiance would bring tears to one’s eyes and a lump to one’s throat. When the singing of one’s alma mater would harken found memories of school days and loyalty to an institution that forged lifetime friendships and associations. There was a time when the words Semper Fi and This We Defend and Fly, Fight, Win and Honor, Courage and Commitment locked arms for battle against strong odds. There was a time when “I Do” meant “you did.”
Yes, words do mean something when issued from the heart and soul, when bound up in unalterable and unflinching loyalty and belief. There are many thousands who died on hills to prove the reality of the creeds they espoused, taking bullets, falling on grenades, carrying the wounded on their backs, ushering women and children to lifeboats, rushing back into burning houses. Who says and believes these things anymore? Who can barely choke out the Star Spangled Banner?
15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. 2 Thessalonians 2:15
Paul talks here of holding fast “the tradition,” “to be strong, mighty, to prevail,” in firmly grasping God’s truth as taught by the Apostles by word or letter. When something talks about “my truth” they are espousing personal beliefs which can’t help to have been formed by experiences, prejudices, or by a longing to be accepted where there is no truth. It is to march to one’s own drumbeat. This may be lauded by some, that is the world, but it is scorned by God. They’ll say he’s his own man, but he’s rallying around his own flag. The only way to “take that hill” is to cling to the word of God. There is no exception.
16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, 17 comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17
As such, Paul offers this benediction. It is loaded to the gills with truth and inspiration. It’s better than a fight song! If we only had one verse of God’s word to cling to, this might be it.
