12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,
13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 1 Corinthians 2:12–13
Many of us have jobs in which there’s a sales process. Education is the key to success. You need to instill a need for what you’re selling in the mind of your customer so that you may fulfill it with your product or service. The hardest sell is to someone who already knows what there is to be known, “who’s been there, done that.”
In a way, Paul was preaching to the choir. They’d heard it all before, but had not combined “spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.” The spirit of God enables us to connect the dots. Whatever angle or perspective that’s been on our blind side comes into view, and we finally get it. Walking in the spirit involves many “aha” moments. As the verse says,
22 The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22–23
This verse illustrates how the Spirit freely and generously gives to us, in lovingkindnesses, compassions, and faithfulness. It doesn’t even feel like we’re doing anything, and that is by design! The only response we can manage to utter is “thank you God!”
These are the only “spiritual words” he really wants to hear.
